Our years of advocating for more funded beds for mental health patients has been rewarded. Today we welcome the announcement we’ve secured $10.9 million of government funding to not only upgrade our existing mental health acute inpatient unit but to increase the number of beds there by 25 percent (from 15 to 20).

SWH CEO Crag Fraser says this announcement recognises the needs of mental health consumers in our region and supports our mental health team to provide consumers with high quality, safe mental health inpatient care, closer to home.

‘Providing a safe and comfortable environment in line with current standards is at the forefront of planning and the revised building layout will enable us to provide inpatient care that is tailored to the needs of specific groups and individuals,’ he says.

Bearing in mind the unit will continue to operate daily as this extensive upgrade takes place, the completion date is not expected before March next year at the earliest.
