The door-takings of this weekend’s South West Bottle & Collectables Club’s State Show will be generously donated to our $6,000 SmileyScopes 4 Kids Appeal. To be held at the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club’s Wannon Function Centre, inside there’ll be an exciting display of rarely-seen personal collections plus the sale of collectables of every description, bottles included. Outside, there’ll be a display of cars courtesy of the Warrnambool & District Historical Vehicle Club. The doors open on Saturday from 9am–5pm ($5 for adults and free for children) and on Sunday from 9am–2.30pm (via a gold coin donation). The Sunday also includes an auction.

A SmileyScope takes children on virtual-reality adventures to relieve stress and anxiety during medical procedures. They can swim with seals, snuggle kittens at cat cafes, relax under a starry sky… even meditate with Sir David Attenborough. Used in leading children’s hospitals in Australia and the US, we trialled them last year and they were an absolute hit. They cost $3,000/year to rent (you cannot buy them) and we want a set each for our Paediatrics Unit and the paediatrics treatment room in our Emergency Department, where the staff snapped in this photo by Warrnambool Weekly’s Jodie Welsh work: Paediatrics Unit registered nurse Sophie Weir (left) and Emergency Department nurse unit manager Jess Brereton.

We’ve recently received a $3,000 donation to fund the 12-month rental of a Smileycope for children in our Camperdown Hospital. With the terrific support of the South West Bottle & Collectables Club, and your support of their event this weekend, we’ll hopefully soon have the $6,000 to pay for the pair we want for children in our Warrnambool Base. If you’d like to make a donation to help us with this cause please phone appeal manager Suzan Morey on 5564 4100.
