South West Healthcare (SWH) is the major specialist referral centre for the Barwon South West sub-region. Our regional footprint spans five LGAs. Employing more than 1,800 staff, we are the region’s largest employer. With a recently strengthened medical workforce and stabilised range of specialities across acute, sub-acute, specialist, community, mental health and aged care services, we have a deep and committed approach to community-centred care. We were proudly awarded the Premier’s Award for Health Service of the Year (Medium) in 2019. In the past 12 years, we have seen exceptional growth. We are a vital contributor to not only population health, but to community life, generating local economic benefit in excess of $125m.

Our board of directors and the individual directors of our public health service have formal duties and responsibilities to the Minister for Health (the Minister), the Secretary of the Department of Health (the Department) and the public (the stakeholders). The board oversees the performance of South West Healthcare and ensures we are meeting the policy and performance objectives of the Minister. The board is held ultimately responsible for all aspects of our health service’s activities.
Directors are appointed for a one to three year term by the Governor in Council, upon the recommendation of the Minister for Health.
The South West Healthcare board meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at 4.00 pm. Directors are also involved in various board subcommittees which include Quality and Clinical Risk; Financial Performance, Audit and Financial Risk; Consumer and Community Advisory Committee; Governance and Remuneration.
These positions provide an exciting opportunity for members of the Victorian public with relevant experience and qualifications to contribute to the strategic leadership of public health care delivery to the community.
