South West Healthcare is pleased to announce completion of Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the Emergency Department Expansion Project.
South West Healthcare Nurse Practitioner, Nicole is captured preparing the new multi-person triage bay. This new Emergency Department feature will allow for SWH clinical staff to simultaneously triage two people, resulting in faster, more efficient triage care.
Opening to the public last week on Thursday 11 July 2024, stages 2 and 3 offers brand-new entry to the department, a new temporary waiting room and a walk-in patient triage area and patient registration hub. In addition to these upgraded patient facing areas, these stages deliver brand new ambulance bays, and more clinical areas such as a multi—person triage bay, separate infectious patient waiting room, more consultation space and a number of support areas such as space for staff to write up notes.
While the expansion project continues, the Emergency Department will remain accessible from Ryot Street, Warrnambool and signage is readily available to assist patients and visitors when accessing the department via the new entrance, just meters away from the original entrance.
The final stage of the Emergency Department Expansion project (stage 4) will deliver:
- A brand-new, large waiting room with dedicated adult and paediatric areas
- a dedicated security guard office
- More clinical areas including brand new medication room
- Brand new support area spaces
- More patient amenities including all-access toilet and food and drink vending machines
South West Healthcare’s Acting Manager of Capital Infrastructure Simon Fogarty explained “The Emergency Department expansion project aims to alleviate current pressures by enhancing our existing facilities before the completion of the new Emergency Department as a part of $384.2M Warrnambool Base Hospital Redevelopment (WBHR) Clinical Services Building” Both the upgraded Emergency Department on Ryot Street and the future Emergency Department will adopt new Model of Cares, for which the expansion has been specifically designed.
During construction of Stage 4, patients and visitors may experience intermittent noise and vibration impacts throughout their treatment within the Emergency Department and surrounding departments.
We thank our community in advance for your patience during these periods of disruption as we build better access to health care in the South West
